Flat Tires and Thunderstorms

I had no problem hitting my 5-hour exercise goal this week -- I biked another 50 miles and played racquetball after work on Friday, putting me at almost 7 hours.

On Sunday, before heading to a BBQ I tried to get another 20-or-so miles in, despite foreboding forecasts. I ended up hiding under a tree, trying to fix a flat tire in a full-on thunderstorm (the tree didn't help much -- I got about as wet as a person can get). As (bad) luck would have it, the spare inner-tube I bought a couple weeks ago was mysteriously no longer attached to my rack, which meant a long walk back to my car...

It's supposed to be rainy all week, so it'll be considerably harder to get in my time outdoors. We'll see...

Midwest Mayhem, 2009

I went to Midwest Mayhem last weekend, which is KDHX's (the local independent radio station) annual bash at the City Museum (which is really more of a playground made out of found objects). The Museum is such a perfect place to host this eclectic, indie event, and it was packed. (I heard there were something like 2,000 people there, but spread across 4 stages.)

My favorites of the evening: Rum Drum Ramblers, The Grass Pack, The Dock Ellis Band, and the Funky Butt Brass Band.

Sara Finke took a *ton* of great pictures.

Don't Break the Chain

Ever since I heard about Jerry Seinfeld's "Don't Break the Chain" productivity technique, I've been looking for a chain of my own to start, and I think I've finally found it.

The St. Louis area has a ton of great biking/hiking trails, and I rode 50 miles last weekend (which is a lot for me and my non-rode-bike). Most of that was on the Katy trail, which is a rails-to-trails bike trail that runs 250 miles across Missouri, and is *very* beautiful (I'll definitely gonna take my camera next time). The total mileage took about 5 hours, and I think that's a reasonable per-week goal for me, so that'll be my chain. It won't always be biking, of course, but 5 hours of exercise (preferably outdoor) per week seems very doable.

Stay tuned for updates!
